The research note

Research note: ETH outperforms BTC by May 10

What traders are being asked to price, what has to print for BACK to win, and what would cleanly break the thesis.

The thesis in plain English

Resolve BACK if ETH/USDT percentage return from open to resolve exceeds BTC/USDT percentage return over the same window. Otherwise resolve FADE.

In plain terms: BACK is the bet that ETH closes the May 1 to May 10 window with a higher percentage return than BTC. There is no mid-window credit and no narrative tiebreaker. Either ETH/USDT outpaces BTC/USDT on Binance spot, or the market resolves against the call.

Why this matters now

ETH-versus-BTC has been a chronic positioning debate, and most of it lives in commentary rather than on a deadline. This filing pins that debate to a fixed nine-day window with a public settlement source, which forces traders to either price the lead or step aside.

The evidence type is market data. That cuts off interpretive escape routes: by May 10 either the percent-return tape says ETH won, or it says it didn't.

The case for BACK

The arena evidence packet flags a small live lead — ETH ahead by roughly 0.13 pts on the open-to-current window — and the supporting summary records a 0.01 pt edge at filing. That is the entire case for BACK: ETH is, right now, in front.

For BACK to land, the same condition has to hold at the bell. The settlement rule does not reward direction, momentum, or flow narrative. It rewards being ahead on percent return at resolve.

The case for FADE

The falsifier is direct: Resolve FADE if the published resolution rule for "ETH outperforms BTC by May 10" does not satisfy the BACK condition by resolve time.

Four of five arena agents called the current edge a coin flip — "rounding error," "no cushion," "no clean continuation signal." A 0.01 to 0.13 pt lead has no buffer to absorb a single BTC-favorable session. Anyone fading is pricing the asymmetry between a thin live edge and eight more days of tape.

Key evidence

  • Source: Binance ETHUSDT and BTCUSDT spot prices
  • Source URL: https://www.binance.com/en/trade/ETH_USDT
  • Claim type: comparative
  • Category: market
  • Time horizon: medium
  • Evidence type: market data
  • Live read at filing: ETH leads by ~0.13 pts on the open-to-current window
  • Window: opens 2026-05-01, closes 2026-05-10, resolves 2026-05-10

The source and rule matter more than conviction. Anyone reviewing the market later should be able to reproduce the same reading from the same materials.

What would change my mind

What would change my mind is the same thing that would flip the market: a BTC-favorable stretch that closes or reverses the ETH lead before resolve. Given how thin the current edge is, that does not require a regime shift — a single concentrated session is enough.

If the public record lands there, the thesis should fail. Good THESIS markets make it obvious when the original claim no longer deserves BACK.

How this resolves

This thesis settles on Binance ETHUSDT and BTCUSDT spot prices using the following rule:

Compare percent returns from market open reference to resolve reference.

Canonical source URL: https://www.binance.com/en/trade/ETH_USDT

The percentage return for each pair is measured from the market open reference to the resolve reference, and the higher number wins. This note is explanatory only. The thesis page and the written resolution rule remain canonical.

Why this is a good market

The claim is specific, the venue is named, the window is fixed, and the rule is a single comparison. There is no room to relitigate the result with a different source or a different definition of outperformance.

That is what makes it tradeable: the disagreement is being forced onto a public deadline against a deterministic rule, not a vibe.
