The thesis in plain English
If the current equity rebound is still being carried more by squeeze mechanics than clean repricing, small caps should keep outperforming while volatility stays suppressed through the resolution window.
In plain trader terms: if this is short covering plus vol seller flow, IWM keeps grinding higher and ^VIX stays pinned. If it is genuine repricing, leadership broadens out and vol does not need to be this quiet.
Why this matters now
The tape is asking traders to pick a side. Either the rebound is a real breadth expansion that has earned its multiple back, or it is a positioning unwind dressed up as conviction.
Small-cap leadership with compressed vol is the cleanest signature of the squeeze interpretation. Both legs together are the tell. Either one alone is noise.
This is a fixed-window market, not a take. It opens Apr 20, 2026, closes Apr 27, 2026, and resolves May 4, 2026 against named public closes. The narrative has a deadline.
The case for BACK
BACK is the bet that the squeeze has not exhausted itself. Dealers stay long gamma, short interest keeps getting bled out into strength, vol sellers keep collecting, and IWM rides that flow into the resolution window.
The trigger is asymmetric in a way that matters: BACK needs both legs to print. IWM has to close at or above 1.02 × the open-day close, and ^VIX has to close at or below 0.95 × the open-day close. No half-credit. The setup has to actually look like a squeeze on May 4, not just rhyme with one.
The case for FADE
FADE wins on either failure. Small caps give back two percent off the open-day mark, or ^VIX re-expands five percent, and the structure is broken.
The falsifier in the rule: Resolve FADE if I1 is at or below 0.98 × I0 or V1 is at or above 1.05 × V0. One leg is enough. That is the right asymmetry for a squeeze thesis, because a squeeze that is really running should not fail in either dimension.
The macro setups that get FADE paid: any hard data print that forces rates back into the conversation, an earnings disappointment that hits small-cap balance sheets, or a credit wobble that reawakens the vol bid.
Key evidence
- Primary source: Yahoo Finance daily close for iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM)
- Required cross-check: Yahoo Finance daily close for CBOE Volatility Index (^VIX)
- BACK trigger: IWM ≥ +2% AND ^VIX ≤ -5% from open-day close
- FADE trigger: IWM ≤ -2% OR ^VIX ≥ +5% from open-day close
- Window: opens Apr 20, 2026, closes Apr 27, 2026, resolves May 4, 2026
- Non-trading-day fallback baked into the rule on both endpoints
The thresholds and the AND/OR structure are the whole game. Anyone reading later should be able to pull the two closes and resolve this themselves.
What would change my mind
The market changes my mind the same way it should change yours: the public closes land outside the BACK box. Either ^VIX comes off the floor, or IWM stops leading, or both.
And because FADE only needs one leg, it is genuinely the easier side to defend on a probabilistic basis. A clean BACK requires the squeeze to keep working in two dimensions at once, into a deadline. That is the discipline this thesis is built on.
How this resolves
This thesis settles on the following rule, applied verbatim:
Use Yahoo Finance daily close data for iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) as the primary source and Yahoo Finance daily close data for the CBOE Volatility Index (^VIX) at https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/%5EVIX/history/ as the required cross-check. Define I0 as the IWM daily close and V0 as the ^VIX daily close on opensAt, using the most recent prior US trading day if opensAt falls on a non-trading day. Define I1 and V1 the same way on resolvesAt. Resolve BACK if I1 is at or above 1.02 × I0 and V1 is at or below 0.95 × V0, showing that the rebound kept squeezing higher while volatility stayed compressed. Resolve FADE if I1 is at or below 0.98 × I0 or V1 is at or above 1.05 × V0, showing that squeeze structure failed or volatility re-expanded. Resolve VOID for all other outcomes or if either source is unavailable.

Why this is a good market
The claim is specific, the trigger is numeric, the sources are public and free, and the asymmetry is honest. BACK has to earn both legs. FADE only has to break one. The window is short enough that nobody gets to wait for a different macro regime to bail the thesis out.
